We welcome submissions from graduate students and postdoctoral fellows, particularly on current topics in the study of work and labour. This year, we will also accept 4-5 submissions from upper-year undergraduate students from York University’s Work & Labour Studies program.

Our goal is to motivate new conversations of methodological and theoretical approaches, with topics including (but not limited to):

  • Inflation and globalization
  • Job precarity and intersectionality
  • Gig workers and unions
  • Self-determination and community organizing
  • Work equity, diversity, and inclusion
  • Racial capitalism, colonialism, and work
  • Public policy, welfare, and work
  • Work, migration, and social reproduction of inequality
  • Labour movements, political parties, and the state

The Symposium serves as an excellent opportunity for students to present their research papers as well as works in progress to obtain feedback from distinguished respondents. Emerging academics are also encouraged to take this opportunity to increase social networks and foster meaningful dialogues.

Proposal Submissions:

The Symposium accepts proposals internationally. Submissions are open to undergraduates, graduate students, and emerging academics. Please provide a title, a 250-word abstract of the proposed presentation, and a short biography for individual presentations, including affiliation, current position, and research interests. For panel submissions, please provide a title and 250-word summary for the overall session, along with titles, abstracts, and bios for all session participants.

Please submit your proposal and supporting information here. The submission deadline has been extended to Sunday, July 31, 2022, by 11:59 pm ET. Participants will be notified of the status of their proposal by mid-September 2022. Presenters will receive a small honorarium following the Symposium.

Publication of Presentations:

Following the Symposium, participants will be invited to submit their papers for online publication on the GLRC website. Papers will be reviewed by a scholar with relevant expertise. Authors will receive a small honorarium following publication.
